The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite finished higher for a third straight week, cementing gains even after a Friday session where all three leading indexes lost ground.

The tech-focused Nasdaq, benchmark S&P 500, and blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average finished the day down 0.4%, 0.2%, and 0.1%, respectively. Only the Dow finished the week lower, snapping a two-week winning streak.

Indexes slipped Friday in part because the U.S. Census Bureau's retail sales data declined 0.6% in July when a 0.1% rise was expected by economists, down from a 0.2% increase in June. The University of Michigan preliminary consumer sentiment survey for August, meanwhile, came in below expectations as the public remains downbeat, with many concerned about the labor market.

"Unexpected weakness in consumer spending isn't good news for the wider economy, but markets may embrace the data in the near term because it strengthens the case for avoiding rate hikes," Ellen Zentner, Chief Economic Strategist for Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, said in written commentary.

The 10-year Treasury yield, which influences interest rates on a variety of consumer loans including mortgages, was above 4.69% at 4 p.m. ET, up nearly five basis points from Thursday's close.

The Magnificent Seven mega-cap tech firms finished mostly lower after all but Amazon (AMZN) ended in the green Thursday. Shares of Broadcom (AVGO), the world's sixth-most-valuable publicly traded company with a market capitalization of roughly $1.9 trillion, fell almost 6%, the worst-performing stock in the Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500. Memory stock SanDisk (SNDK) rose more than 7% advance.

Reddit (RDDT) shares soared almost 13% after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced the stock would join the S&P 500 ahead of the opening bell next Tuesday; Applied Materials (AMAT) fell 5% after its earnings report; and SpaceX (SPCX) stock was 1% lower after falling more than 3% Thursday.

Crude oil futures were slightly higher Friday following two days of declines, as investors mulled comments from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to Newsmax that the U.S. next week will "apply measures like have never been seen in the history of the economic isolation of a country," referring to Iran. WTI futures, the U.S. benchmark, advanced 1.3% to $82.25 a barrel in recent trading, while Brent futures, the international benchmark, were up 1.6% to $88.45.

Gold futures were 0.3% higher to $4,435 an ounce. Bitcoin traded at around $62,900, down modestly over the past 24 hours. The U.S. dollar index, which tracks the value of the greenback against a basket of foreign currencies, declined 0.3% to 99.67.

S&P 500, Nasdaq End Higher for 3rd Straight Week

Seemingly all day long, the Nasdaq Composite hovered right around its closing level of last Friday. It was able to finish above the mark.

The Nasdaq joined the S&P 500 in closing higher for a third straight week.

Over the five sessions, the tech-focused Nasdaq finished up 0.1%. The benchmark S&P 500 ended up 0.4%, while the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 0.6% to have a two-week winning streak snapped.

For the year, the Nasdaq is up about 15%, while the S&P 500 and Dow are a respective 14% and 12% higher.

The three major U.S. indexes are up roughly 12% to 15% this year.

Copart Stock Leads S&P 500, Nasdaq 100 Today

Copart stock is surging today for no apparent reason. Shareholders happily will take it.

Copart (CPRT) shares are jumping 7% to lead the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 even though the company apparently did not issue a press release or regulatory filing.

Shares of Dallas-based Copart—which operates an online marketplace for buying and selling vehicles, mostly salvage, damaged, used, and wholesale vehicles—are down 20% this year even with today's rise.

In late June, the company announced that chief executive Jeff Liaw would step down on July 31 and be replaced by Executive Chairman Jay Adair, who previously had served as CEO.

Beyond Meat Stock Undergoes 1-for-30 Reverse Split

Beyond Meat shares are surging today, but only because of a corporate maneuver to maintain compliance with Nasdaq listing requirements.

Shares of Beyond Meat (BYND) are up roughly 12% Friday after a 1-for-30 reverse split took effect.

On Tuesday, the plant protein company announced it would undergo the reverse split to "regain compliance with the minimum bid price requirement for continued listing on the Nasdaq Global Select Market."

Although reverse stock splits can indicate financial distress, they may also attract institutional investors, something that CEO Ethan Brown noted in the press release earlier this week, when he said that "we believe the reverse stock split is an important step toward maintaining our Nasdaq listing and better positioning our stock for long-term investor participation."

Even with today's sharp rise, Beyond Meat shares are down 44% since the start of the year, 84% over the last 12 months, and 97% over the past three years.

Information Technology Is Worst-Performing S&P 500 Sector Today

More S&P 500 sectors are in the green than red today, but the benchmark index is lower overall. Tech shares are to blame.

The S&P 500 Information Technology Sector is 0.6% lower to lead declines of the 11 industries tracked by the index.

Health Care is down nearly as much, but just three of the nine others are in negative territory today.

Broadcom (AVGO) is more than 6% lower and the worst-performing stock in the overall S&P 500.

Workday Shares Coming Back to Earth After Soaring Thursday

"What goes up must come down" seemingly applies to Workday stock today.

A day after soaring 18% to pace the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, Workday (WDAY) shares are down 5% to rank among the worst-performing stocks in the indexes.

Shares jumped yesterday following a Reuters report that private-equity firm Silver Lake was in talks to acquire the software firm.

Workday stock is down about 9% since the start of 2026.

Bitcoin Falls as Regulatory Hopes Are Dashed

Crypto investors got a letdown this week–and not just from bitcoin prices.

The price of bitcoin, which was around $65,000 on Monday, sank to around $62,500 as of Friday morning. Crypto-linked stocks including Coinbase (COIN), Robinhood (HOOD), and Strategy (MSTR) were down at least 2% in morning trading.

The latest dip comes as investors are sorting through the latest regulatory developments from Washington. One that cropped up: Though the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday said it would hold an open meeting today to discuss potential new rules around how crypto startups could raise capital, it cancelled that meeting right before it was supposed to take place.

Moves to create rules for crypto-startup fundraising were seen as a consolation prize after the Senate on Saturday started its five-week recess without advancing a key crypto bill called the Clarity Act.

On Polymarket, the perceived odds of the Clarity Act passing in 2026 have sunk to 20% from highs of about 80% earlier this year.

An SEC spokesperson told Investopedia that the regulator was "committed to delivering on the President's agenda to bring certainty to the crypto space," citing an "unforeseen scheduling issue" for the move of today's meeting to a yet-unscheduled date.

Applied Materials Stock Slides, Despite Solid Results

Shares of Applied Materials (AMAT) were down about 5% in premarket trading, despite earnings that topped analysts' estimates.

The chip equipment maker reported adjusted earnings per share of $3.50 on revenue that jumped 25% year-over-year to $9.12 billion in the company's fiscal third quarter, above projections compiled by Visible Alpha.

Its fourth-quarter outlook of $3.82 to $4.22 in adjusted EPS on revenue of between $9.75 billion and $10.75 billion also came in ahead of forecasts.

It wasn't enough to impress investors, after a strong run for the stock earlier this year. Through Thursday's close, shares of Applied Materials have more than doubled in value year-to-date.

Elon Musk Discloses Nearly 50% Stake in SpaceX

Elon Musk disclosed that he holds 6.42 billion shares of SpaceX (SPCX) representing a 48.4% stake, according to a regulatory filing Thursday. That could value his holding at over $900 billion.

In a post on his X social media platform, Musk said, "A bunch of it only vests on extremely crazy good outcomes for SpaceX, so actual full vested percentage is lower."

Shares of SpaceX climbed about 2% in premarket trading, after taking a hit in yesterday's session.

The Bull Market Is Almost Back for Chip Stocks

After a steep July sell-off, investors are chipping in again.

Chip stocks were some of the biggest gainers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Thursday, a day when markets rose broadly. Shares of SanDisk (SNDK) popped 14%, while Micron Technology (MU) jumped 4% and Arm (ARM) added close to 3%. Intel (INTC) and Qualcomm (QCOM) also climbed, driving the PHLX Semiconductor Sector (SOX) up 0.5%.

Thursday's rise brought the index to the cusp of what would mark the start of a new bull market for the measure. It's rallied nearly 20% from recent lows after a string of strong earnings reports. Still, it remains 15% off its highs in June.

Bank of America analysts in a note Wednesday said that they see the AI server chip market growing faster than previously expected, based on strong AI compute and memory demand trends. They highlighted Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) as their top pick for the industry, citing the breadth of its product portfolio, along with Nvidia (NVDA).

Reddit Stock Soars on News of S&P 500 Inclusion

An acquisition in the residential apartment space opened up a spot in the S&P 500. Reddit is filling it, and shareholders doubtless are grateful.

Reddit (RDDT) shares are soaring 12% in premarket trading after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced late yesterday that the stock would join the S&P 500 ahead of the opening bell next Tuesday.

Reddit—known for its platform where people gather in communities to discuss almost any topic—will be replacing AvalonBay Communities (AVB) in the benchmark index, as fellow S&P 500 constituent Equity Residential (EQR) is finalizing its acquisition AvalonBay. After the transaction is completed, the combined company will be renamed Vivmark Residential and remain in the index with a ticker of "VMRK."

"We're proud to be added to the S&P 500, recognizing the growth, momentum, and consistency we've established as a public company," said Reddit CFO Drew Vollero said. "Reddit's raw materials are special, and there is so much potential to continue building great products and scaling profitably. Our focus remains on executing against the many opportunities ahead."

Joining a major index like the S&P 500 generally lifts a stock, as funds that track them must buy shares once a company is added. Reddit could use a boost; shares entered Friday down more than 30% this year.
