L3Harris Technologies (LHX) shares slipped in early trading on Aug. 18 before reversing their intraday decline as investors absorbed the sudden departure of CEO Christopher Kubasik. The defense giant ousted Kubasik following an internal board investigation that revealed conduct "inconsistent with the company's core values," and named Sam Mehta its new president and CEO.

Versus its year-to-date high, L3Harris stock is down more than 25% at the time of writing.

Is the Leadership Change Bearish for L3Harris Stock?

The abrupt leadership change came as a surprise to Wall Street, but L3Harris was quick to reassure the market that Kubasik's ouster wasn't related to financial performance, reporting, or internal controls.

By confirming that core accounting and operational metrics remain fully intact, and reiterating its 2026 guidance, management succeeded in calming the initial investor anxiety.

All in all, the swift promotion of Mehta, an industry veteran who previously oversaw segments generating about 80% of company revenues (Space & Mission Systems), signals strong continuity.

Consequently, the selloff proved short-lived, and LHX shares ended about 1% higher on Tuesday.

How to Play LHX Shares Following the CEO News?

Since the executive shakeup stems entirely from personal conduct rather than operational flaws or missing financial targets, the intrinsic value of L3Harris's core business remains unchanged.

Backed by rising global spend on defense and robust order backlog, LHX stock's year-to-date dip presents a prime buying opportunity.

Note that Citizens Financial has recently disclosed a new $2.98 million stake in L3Harris, signaling institutional confidence in the defense contractor's long-term growth prospects.

As of writing, LHX is trading at a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of about 24.5x, which makes it cheaper to own than peer RTX (RTX) at nearly 31x.

And a healthy 1.78% dividend yield makes L3Harris Technologies even more attractive as a long-term holding.

What's the Consensus Rating on L3Harris Technologies?

Crucially, Wall Street analysts remain largely bullish on LHX for the remainder of this year.

According to Barchart, the consensus rating on L3Harris shares sits at "Moderate Buy," with the mean price target of about $369 indicating potential for a more than 30% rally over the next 12 months.
